In 2011 under a university fellowship, the project began with seven women who received training and grants to start businesses. The women were all from the Sango region outside of Moshi Tanzania. In the beautiful foothills around Mount Kilimanjaro, the women live and in most instances have their home based businesses.
The founder, Shannan Brown, a Canadian, decided to return each year. With the help of friends who are keen fundraisers the project moved away from granting towards microfinance. In the next two years, the project expanded adding in two more groups.
